Murdering someone because he/she offended you in an online game, I still find it hard to believe! A young Russian man has been charged with murder when he killed an internet gaming rival upon meeting face to face. You can view the full article here.I was a avid gamer once and MMORPGs are not foreign to me. Player killing and clan wars are very common in online role playing games. Playing games such as these can be very competitive and of course, frustrating when your in-game character is killed by others. In the virtual world, reputation is everything, and players spend plenty of hours grinding/training, trying every possible ways to become stronger, richer and more influential.

There are times whereby players quarrel/argue with each other and it might just get out of control, for this case - online rivals arranging to meet in real life to settle issues. Which is more real? Virtual identity or outside identity? Sometimes the alternate switching between virtual life and real life might confuse the person; A moment of impulse in the virtual world results in severe repercussions in real life.
Ultimately, I feel that players should be aware of this. They should not be too emotionally distracted by what others say online since communication through computers and computer networks might be deceptive and misleading. Online games are solely for entertainment purposes, what's the point of being so worked out over a game? Is it worth while to spark off conflicts over the virtual world? Think about it.

I used to be a game addict. I feel that sometimes although there were lots of violence and inapproiate material but it help me relief myself after a stressful at work. I feel that its better i vent my anger in the virtual world rather then in reality.
woah. i was really shocked with the article. and futhermore the kid (ok barely a kid but yknow) wasnt even like remorseful or anything! he didnt even bother to properly justify his actions (which are unjustifiable anyways) and its like nothing to him. i know the internet and gaming has many down points. but this. is a WHOLE NEW turn. CMCs are really changing the characters of people these days, and as the generation moves into the internet dependent and game addiction stage, i wont be surprised if more and more youth cannot differentiate their avators from their real self. its really quite sad.
I agree with you that sometimes gamers let their emotions rule their mind.In our fast paced world, MMORPGs to some might be their 'second life', hence any abuse or shame brought to their virtual avatar might result in an aggressive response. I think that as a a person, we should try to strike the balance with work and play.
isn't it ironic how people seek solace in the virtual world in order to escape real life's stress and to let go abit. how is it possible then that these kids get so worked up over a game? whilst i understand the anger sometimes felt at enemy clans, i cannot begin to comprehend the amount of hatred and brutality involved in physically taking another person's life.
yea. emotions rule our mind when we are too absorbed in this kind of games. i must admit i do sometimes get angry at myself if i lose a dota match. however, thats human nature isint it? wanting to win in everything we do. sometimes i would wonder why i would lose my temper over such games which probably will not affect me after that.i agree with ken that we shld strike a balance between VL and RL.
That's why Singapore did ban or going to ban 2 games:
Gears of War 2, for extreme violence and gore. The player is able to engage a chainsaw on the rifle and slice the alien from in between the legs, upward.
Mass Effect, for a lesbian scene where the human female has an intimate scene with a female alien.
I think sometimes, people who aren't careful blur the line between fantasy and reality
A worse case scenario of online games rivalry.
Personally, i find it crazy that the young russian gamer actually had the guts to carry out such an act and is crazed enough to believe his clan's motto, literally. Disillusioned? Rash? Stupid? Yes to all 3...
He may not regret now, but will definitely regret his actions in years to come. Seriously in need of a huge smack in the face...like what we say in the army, ''wake up your idea lah!''
